YAY! I have a friend that hasn't been at the meetings for several years now. She did go to the memorial last year, but I don't know how she feels about the organization. I've run into her a couple of times since my escape, but I've been afraid to broach the subject in public.

What was life like for you as a JW teenager?
by highdose inin the wt's illistrations they portray jw teenagers as happy, together group.
my experinace is that the jw teenagers in the cong were some of the bitchyist backstabbing arse holes i'll ever meet.. it was unheard of for us to engage in group "wholesome activity" as show in the wt's illistrations.
the competition amongst the girls for the handsome, sane and elders sons were cut throat.

The COBOE in my former congregation allowed his kids to be in the school band, but they weren't allowed to march in holiday parades or play in holiday concerts. I'm amazed at how flexible and tolerant the local school teachers and administrators were, because Brother COBOE is a real horse's posterior.

How Many Out There Have to Hide or Be Stealthy When They Visit This Site? I know I do.
by PaintedToeNail ini cannot look at this site freely, it would make my hubby and son very upset.
i have to hide what i'm looking at, or try to view this page very late or very early in the morning.
hubby has taken to getting up at 11:30pm or later, to see what i'm doing on the computer.

The first few days I was lurking here I was careful to do it in stealth mode and I kept a different tab open so I could switch over if the kids or the husband got nosy. Now, I leave it up and logged in all the time. There's a password on the screensaver to keep the kids off my computer though.

Social Networking - Dangers
by IMHO incan someone enlighten me to the dangers of having 'friends' you don't know?.

IMHO, the flaw in your premise is that the user actually has control over the information they post. Once you post something, unless you have no "friends" and your account is viewable only by yourself, someone else can spread whatever you posted. Facebook can, and has been, hacked. Facebook in particular has a history of changing the default privacy settings without notice, leaving people's accounts viewable be the general public. Anytime you turn over private information to a third party, you are trusting that third party to handle it properly. It's like the notes kids used to pass in class - you were trusting that your best friend Susie wouldn't hand over the note you wrote saying "Bobby is soooo cute" - the difference is that Facebook doesn't really care about embarrassing you and Facebook will retain that note forever.

"Social networking" is a problem itself because it is designed specifically to encourage people to post things that are risky to broadcast willy-nilly. There is a wide range of human behavior that is acceptable or even commendable among certain demographic groups that is equally excoriated among other demographic groups. There is a lot of value in being able to control information - and you just give that away on facebook.

There are a lot of people who are naive and don't realize that anything on the internet is permanent and eventually available to anyone who wants to see it. Privacy on the internet is an oxymoron. I would go so far as to say that anyone who was really interested could find my full name, address, and phone number with enough digging. The only really safe policy is to never post anything that you wouldn't want broadcast on the evening news, but that doesn't leave much to talk about.

Long-Term Effects of Physical Abuse
by rebel8 inobviously this is a very personal matter.
i can't believe i'm posting it here but i need to make myself.
i'm probably going to regret this.. i have discussed before that i was physically abused and neglected as a jw child.

I was physically abused as a child, although not on a regular basis and not nearly as severely as many people here. I have never thought about my "issues" as being caused by or related to that abuse, I always just assumed I was weird. But I recognize a lot of the traits and habits mentioned above in myself. It seems that I have been able to build a relatively successful life for myself and my family, but I wonder what else I might have done without all that baggage weighing me down.

by Yan Bibiyan inno, this is not a boeing-made aircraft.. it is not just a notch up from 6-6-6 either (although, it would be fitting).
7 billion people on earth.
7 million jehovah's witnesses.

There must be JWs in my neck of the woods...
by Aussie Oz in16 months and counting...no visit by a carload of time wasters doing rural witnessing.. i'm home everyday except when i am not, same for the wife, and still no visits.. either the closest congregation are real slack or there are none assigned to our locality!.
mixed bag, depending on what i have been reading, i would either want to play with them nicely or sting em up by their thumbs.... maybe it's best they stay away.... oz.
